The Power of YET

This entry was posted in News on by .

Part of preparing students for learning is to help teach them to have a growth mindset. This means teaching them to recognize that there are certain things they are not able to do YET. To do this you can help your child think back to things they once couldn’t do like riding a bike, eating on their own or getting dressed. Helping them to have faith that if they try their best and remember that just because they can’t do something yet, doesn’t mean they won’t ever be able to. This mindset helps students approach learning with an open mind.

Castle Quest Knighting Ceremony

This entry was posted in News on by .

Rock Creek Community Academy has participated in the Boosterthon, Fun Run, for three years now.  It is an outstanding program that teaches good character as well as raises funds to help our school.  This year’s Fun Run theme is Castle Quest.  The students go on an adventure to learn all the qualities of a true hero.  We, the fourth grade teachers, thought this was a great opportunity to create some magic in our classrooms.  We decided to plan a secret knighting ceremony for all of our students.  To prepare for this, the students wrote short essays on what they felt their best character trait was, and gave an example of a time when they demonstrated this trait.  This assignment was very reflective and we designed  the assignment to make the child proud of that trait.  Days after these writings were complete, we surprised the kids with a knighting ceremony.  We dressed up like queens and spoke in the language of “yesteryear.”  We called each character trait group to the stage.  They were asked to accept the responsibility of knighthood in the name of that trait.  They took a knee, and one by one each child was named and knighted with a shiny, gold staff.  As teachers, we need to be examples of passion and pride for our students. We need to make memories with them! This ceremony was something the fourth grade class of 2017-2018 will never forget.

Boosterthon Fun Run

Once again, this year’s main fundraiser is the Rock Creek BOOSTERTHON!

Hosting a Fun Run means there is no selling or delivering of products. Once our program begins on October 30, family and friends anywhere in the world can support our school by giving pledges toward the number of laps your students will run on the day of the Fun Run: November 8.

Our Fun Run will be powered by the Boosterthon Fun Run, a fun organization that organizes Fun Runs all over the country. This year 2,100 schools just like ours will run their Fun Run through this organization.

Our Fun Run also comes with a world class character theme. This year’s theme is CASTLE QUEST, an English castle theme all about being brave and living with character. On their way to regain Bravemore Castle, students will learn the “Six Virtues of a True hero” from a cast of colorful characters. Castle Quest was made in collaboration with Character Counts!, The nation’s most reputable character ED organization.

Through this year’s Fun Run our goal is to raise $15,000 for Rock Creek Athletics and Continued Technology Improvement.
